Lead Transportation Specialist - Rail

Job Description

Stepan is seeking a Rail Planning Lead to join our transportation team in Joliet, IL. In this role, candidate will report to Senior Transportation Manager.


The Rail Planning Lead will be responsible for day-to-day rail operations including but not limited to safety, equipment availability, and track and tracing, and ensures U.S. DOT Regulatory Compliance for all Stepan’s leased tank cars.  In addition, candidate will be responsible for ensuring adherence to the domestic, regional and global regulatory policies governing transportation and distribution of Stepan’s products. This role will also have a dangerous goods compliance component as well. The team will train the new hire on this component. Dangerous goods experience is a plus but not required.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing regulatory compliance for all Stepan’s Leased Tank Cars and ensuring that the quality of all rail services provided meets the required safety standards
  • Assisting all needed rail logistics equipment to service both internal and external customers
  • Tracking and tracking tank cars and making special shipping arrangements as necessary
  • Developing processes that make the rail supply chain more efficient and organized
  • Leading coordination for all dangerous goods governance initiatives relating to packaging, distribution, shipping and/or transport of hazardous freight outlined with the U.S. DOT, IATA and IMDG.
  • Ensure employees working with hazardous materials are compliant to dangerous goods training requirements, and ensure record are retains in appropriate systems.


  • Has strong practical skills and knowledge in Rail Transportation as well as basic understanding in other modes of transportation including Over-the-road, Air and Ocean
  • Has working knowledge in U.S. DOT, IATA and IMDG regulatory compliance.
  • Basic computer skills, Word/Excel/On-line Forms Completion
  • Proficient in SAP
  • MS Office Product and Lotus Notes


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required.  Master is a plus.
  • APICS Certified is a plus
