Senior Analytical Chemist

Job Description

Stepan is looking for a Senior Analytical Chemist, part of R&D's Analytical Group located at our Global Technology Center (GTC) in Northfield, IL. This position will be responsible for the work effort in aligning analytical methods and data between labs.  These activities can take place between global labs in Stepan R&D, Stepan QC, customers, suppliers, and tollers (the contract manufacturers that extend our manufacturing capability).  Plans round robin and Gage R&R experiments.  Collects and sends out samples to global labs, ensuring uniformity and safety.  Works with others to make necessary method adjustments when data is not aligned.  Proactively suggests next steps to gain data alignment between labs and follows-up until resolved.  Performs own lab work and coordinates some work through the Rapid Analytical technician group at Stepan Northfield.  Primary work location is Stepan Northfield R&D, although travel to U.S. and Global facilities is common (up to 20% of time). Problem solves and troubleshoots instrument/method issues.  Provides technical advice and training to colleagues. Communicates effectively with internal and external customers/stakeholders and documents meticulously.  Actively participates in safety/waste programs and steadfastly adheres to safety policies/standards. This role can work up to 2 days a week remote. Relocation package offered.

 

Other Key Responsibilities:

  • Runs and owns the Global Audit Program (GAP), in partnership with Quality Assurance (QA) and reports data out frequently
  • Assists QA in trouble shooting analytical methods, compliance testing, and newly acquired products/sites
  • Implements spectroscopy and color measurement at manufacturing plants and tollers
  • Works with tollers, customers, and manufacturing plants to ensure methods and data is aligned
     

Qualifications

 

  • 3 - 10yrs experience in Industry, depending on depth of experience prior to Industry.  
  • Must have experience with MiniTab or similar statistical software to analyze and communicate data. Considered an expert in data and error analysis.
  • Must have experience across a broad set of analytical methods, including titration, spectroscopy, and chromatography.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate externally. 
  • Committed to continuous improvement of processes, tools, and templates.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to foster collaboration with other team members.

Education

  • B.S. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or closely related field required; Masters Preferred
