Job Title:

JOB OPENING:                                         CHEMICAL PROCESS OPERATOR

 

CURRENT

DUTIES:

      • Performs analytical testing on waste water, and storm-water using a variety of analytical equipment.
      • Responsible for operating equipment in accordance with all written policies and procedures.
      • Responsible for supporting Stepan’s Safety, Environmental & Responsible Care policies including shutting down the plant to avoid unsafe or environmental incidents.
      • Communicates with supervisor all issues with regards to equipment operation.
      • Responsible for good housekeeping practices including: coiling hoses, cleaning up spills, testing area eye wash and safety showers to ensure in good working order, proper storage of equipment, tools, hoses, extension cords etc.
      • Completes daily housekeeping checklists.
      • Responsible for accurate record keeping in SAP.
      • Issue permits for all work on site including hot work and confined space entries. Completes associated atmospheric testing.
      • Oversee contractors to ensure they are completing work safely and complying with permit requirements.
      • Responsible for participating in additional training including regulatory training, PHA reviews, PSSRs, safety meetings etc. as required to support EH&S objectives.
      • Complete Truck Blind Shipping which includes verification of provided paperwork, truck inspection, changing of seals if required, several transactions in SAP and generating new shipping paperwork and certificates of approval.
      • Support site work such as cleaning equipment, maintaining water supply for hot work activities, completing fire watch checks at end of shifts, diverting storm water to waste water when work occurs along main road, etc.
      • Maintain facility access by pumping storm water from containment areas. 
      • Operate utility equipment such as air compressor, fire pump, jockey pumps and replenish diesel fuel supplies as needed.
  • Monitor waste water tanks levels, prepare for pumping to offsite treatment facility by adjusting the pH of the waste water by addition of Acid or Caustic utilizing the automated control systems.
  • Perform safety equipment inspections and test on a weekly basis.       
      • Responsible for controlling waste generation and wash water minimization as identified by our environmental commitments.
      • Perform job-related duties as assigned with a high degree dedication to safety and environmental stewardship.

SHIFT:                           8 and 10 hour rotating shifts Monday to Friday as scheduled.

FUTURE

DUTIES:

      • Safely manufactures finished products in reactors 1, 2 & 3 as well as formulation blending equipment by following approved process instructions; this includes monitoring and maintaining all area equipment within specified guidelines.
      • Responsible for transferring finished products to trailers, railcars, totes, drums etc.
      • Responsible for safe handling of material, including off-loading raw materials (drums/totes, tank trucks and railcars) as required.
      • Performs in-process analytical testing on finished products using a variety of analytical equipment.
      • Safely off-loads ethylene oxide (EO) & propylene oxide (PO) railcars to storage tanks. Both EO & PO are highly hazardous raw materials.
      • Collects data and accurately calculates material balances.
      • Responsible for organizing own work including scheduling breaks so that work is not interrupted.
      • Responsible for inspecting (prior to each shift) equipment to ensure proper operating condition.
      • Responsible for writing work orders for malfunctioning equipment.
      • Responsible for confirming tank availability prior to producing material.
      • Responsible for training new and/or transferred operators.
  • Be an active member of the Stepan site emergency response team and complete required training as required.

 

SHIFT:                          12 hour rotating shifts on both weekend and holidays as scheduled.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
  • Must have excellent analytical approach to problem solving.
  1. Well organized with a focus on managing multiple tasks, safety conscious, responsible and reliable.
  2. Must understand chemical process operations and have the ability to recognise and respond to operational difficulties and potential safety concerns.
  3. Being familiar with Distributed Control System (DCS) operation, basic instrumentation and computer literate.
  4. Experience with ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) is considered an asset.
  5. Forklift and manlift experience is considered an asset.
