Corporate Process Safety Engineer

Job Description

The Corporate Process Safety Engineer will provide global subject matter expertise and directly impact the Process Safety Management (PSM) strategy, performance and compliance at Stepan Company. The incumbent will lead or participate in continuous improvement efforts related to Process Safety risk reduction and compliance with both internal and external requirements. This position reports directly to the Director, Global Process Safety Management. 


Subject matter expertise (SME)
• Delivers expert knowledge for Process Safety Management (PSM) aspects such as PHA methodology and leadership including HAZOP and LOPA and other quantitative risk assessment methodologies; mechanical integrity (process equipment and design, inherently safe design and RAGAGEP, preventive maintenance, testing and inspection); programmable and safety integrated systems integrity; operating procedures and consequence of deviation management: emergency response and mitigating technologies such as fire prevention and protection; incident investigation and root cause analysis; facility siting; management of change; process safety information management; safe work practices.
• Lead and participate in developing PSM training programs and deliver PSM training.
• Actively participate in sustainability efforts aimed at achieving the company’s stated sustainability goals.
• Lead and participate in global PSM incident investigations and make sure they are properly reported, investigated and to ensure that corrective and preventive actions are developed and implemented
• Serve as the corporate subject matter expert for specific elements of a Risk Based Process Safety management system
• Serve as the corporate PSM subject matter expert for insurance carrier loss prevention visits. 

Due diligence
• Upon request participate in due diligence for acquisitions/divestitures and related PSM integration issues to minimize and manage risk for the company.

Management systems, Governance and Compliance assurance
• Development, implementation and continuous improvement of the global PSM system, policies, programs, standards, tools and templates.
• Development and management of continual improvement of corporate PSM standards and procedures. 
• Inform and advise management regarding PSM compliance status and issues, potential risks and liabilities, future impact from new laws and regulations, recommended actions and risk management strategy.
• Upon request, conduct global site audits and compliance reviews and drive corrective and preventive action closure of audit findings including verification and effectiveness review responsibility.

Representation and communication
• Supports and participate as assigned in PSM compliance matters.
• Supports internal communication strategies for key stakeholders that build and maintain awareness of PSM values, strategies, and performance.

Reporting and metrics
• Reports and tracks metrics, key performance indicators and provides PSM operational and specialist reports
• Provides timely performance reporting and technical data and other information to be used for updates to company senior management and other stakeholders as requested

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of experience in PSM regulated chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, biochemical or other process related industry.
• Minimum 5 years with PSM specialist/engineer experience on regional or global level.
• Comfortable interacting and communicating at the executive and board level as well as with senior government officials.  
• Knowledge of global PSM regulations in chemical industry. 
• Detailed experience with regulated process safety programs.
• Proficient in various risk assessment methods and root cause analysis.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver risk reducing performance.
• Ability to work in a demanding, results oriented environment and respond to rapidly changing, dynamic situations 
• Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, including internationally.
• Demonstrated organizational skills, flexibility and an ability to manage multiple projects and tasks in an effective manner 
• Adherence to schedules, scopes, and budgets, as well as Stepan’s project management and quality standards. 
• Professional certification or licensure preferred (i.e. CCPS PSM P, P.E., CHMM etc.)

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical engineering, science, fire engineering or related discipline
• Advanced degree in science, engineering or business administration preferred; Specialized training in PSM regulations and practices.

Pay Range: $120,000 - $160,000

The salary range for this position is determined by considering a variety of factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and the location of the position.
