Compliance Manager - Ethics & Compliance

Job Description

Stepan Company is hiring a Compliance Manager position for our Northbrook, IL office. The Compliance Manager’s primary role is to assist the CCRO (Chief Compliance and Risk Officer) with the development and management of the firm’s compliance program and day-to-day coordination and administration of the firm’s compliance functions.

Responsibilities of position include:
• Coordinate with CCRO on the management and the administration of Stepan’s Code of Conduct and the design and delivery of Ethics & Compliance training employee audiences (live and LMS);
• Manage the execution and documentation of Ethics & Compliance programs (e.g., anti-bribery and anti-corruption compliance and third party risk management);
• Serve as a Compliance Subject Matter Expert (SME) when interacting with various departments within the organization;
• Assist in developing and managing a global network of Ethics and Compliance “Ambassadors” to serve as on the ground Compliance Subject Matter Experts within the organization;
• Administer and assist in the development and maintenance of compliance policies and procedures;
• Evaluate controls and identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and partner with the business in the creation of controls and solutions to mitigate compliance risks;
• Partner with Stepan’s internal audit department to request and design evaluations of the effectiveness of controls related to Compliance imperatives;
• Assist the CCRO in assessing Ethics & Compliance risks at Stepan, and implementing program changes as appropriate in response to those risk assessments;
• Assist with the Firm’s responses and documentation requests to any regulatory inquiries, third party examiners and internal audit;
• Serve as a role model for Stepan’s Values – People First, Integrity, Customer Focused, Continuous Improvement and Growth, Innovation & Sustainability;


• At least 5 years of experience in a compliance function for a manufacturing organization, preferably a publicly traded company with a global footprint (relevant experience at Stepan would be considered as well);
• Additional expertise related to M&A, Quality Assurance and Control, EHS or related compliance fields would be desirable;
• Proven ability to analyze situations for compliance and business risk, and implement solutions to address and mitigate such risk;
• Ability to multi-task effortlessly and manage competing priorities under demanding deadlines;
• Self-motivated professional who will take ownership of their work, think strategically, and be able to work independently and collaboratively with a team;
• Strong understanding of core Ethics and Compliance principles including, but not limited to Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption, Third Party Risk Management, Data Privacy, Conflicts of Interest, etc. (or alternatively strong understanding of Stepan’s business, with strong internal networking);
• Well organized, detail-oriented, and excellent oral and written communication skills.


• Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced degree or applicable certification welcome
