Job Description
Stepan is hiring a Corporate Environmental Engineer, Air position for our Northbrook, IL office. The Corporate Environmental Engineer, Air will provide subject matter expertise to the Environmental Air Management strategy, performance and compliance at Stepan Company. Upon request the Engineer participates in continual improvement and compliance efforts, risk reduction initiatives and supports adherence to company standards, applicable industry standards, and applicable regulations related to Air matters for all Stepan locations. This position reports directly to the Vice President Environmental Health Safety & Secruity.
Subject matter expertise (SME)
• Delivers expert knowledge for Environmental Air Management aspects such as permitting, record keeping, computer modeling, data analysis and reporting.
• Participates in developing Environmental Air training programs and deliver Environmental Air trainings.
• Actively participate in sustainability efforts aimed at achieving the company’s stated sustainability goals.
• Participates/Leads Environmental Air incident investigations and make sure they are properly reported, investigated and to ensure that corrective and preventive actions are developed and implemented.
Due diligence
• Upon request participate in due diligence for acquisitions/divestitures and related Environmental Air integration issues to minimize and manage risk for the company.
Management systems, Governance and Compliance assurance
• Drive development, implementation, sustainment and continuous improvement of corporate Environmental Air systems, policies, compliance programs, sustainability performance programs, standards, tools and templates, as assigned.
• Inform and advise management regarding Environmental Air compliance status and issues, potential risks and liabilities, future impact from new laws and regulations, recommended actions and risk management strategy.
• Upon request, conduct site audits and compliance reviews and drive corrective and preventive action closure of audit findings.
Representation and communication
• Supports and participate as assigned in Environmental Air compliance matters.
• Conducts regular written and oral communication with regulators, agencies, consultants, senior management and legal counsel as directed
• Supports internal communication strategies for key stakeholders that build and maintain awareness of Environmental Air values, strategies, and performance, and sustainment of management system tools and standards.
Reporting and metrics
• Reports and tracks metrics, key performance indicators and provides Environmental Air operational and specialist reports related to performance, compliance and Sustainability
• Provides timely performance reporting and technical data and other information to be used for updates to company senior management and other stakeholders as requested
Qualifications
• Specialized training in Environmental Air regulations and practices.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in Environmental Air regulated chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, biochemical or other process related industry.
• Experience with Environmental Air on US federal, US state level.
• Comfortable interacting and communicating at the executive and board level as well as with senior government officials.
• Knowledge of global Environmental Air regulations in chemical industry.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver air compliance, and risk, related performance improvement.
• Ability to work in a demanding, results oriented environment and respond to rapidly changing, dynamic situations
• Demonstrated organizational skills, flexibility and an ability to manage multiple projects and tasks in an effective manner
• Ability to effectively collaborate across technical disciplines at all levels throughout the organization
• Adherence to schedules, scopes, and budgets, as well as Stepan’s project management and quality standards.
• Strong verbal, written communication and technical writing skills; effective group speaking and presentation skills
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical engineering, science, fire engineering or related discipline required
• Advanced degree in science, engineering preferred
• Professional certification or licensure preferred (i.e. P.E., CHMM etc.)
