Job Description
Stepan Co. is hiring a Global Director of Internal Audit position at our Northbrook, IL headquarters. The Global Director of Internal Audit will be responsible for leading the internal audit function, owning the global internal audit strategy as well as ensuring the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, and governance processes. This role involves leading a team of auditors, developing a risk-based internal audit plan, conducting internal audits, and providing recommendations to improve the organization's operations and compliance. The Global Director of Internal Audit will work closely with executive management, the Audit Committee, the Board of Directors, and the Ethics & Compliance function. The Global Director of Internal Audit reports to the Audit Committee Chair with a dotted line to the Chief Financial Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement the global internal audit strategy based on key risks and priorities.
- Develop and execute the annual global internal audit plan.
- Lead and manage internal audit engagements, including planning, and execution.
- Report to the Audit Committee on a quarterly basis and on an ad-hoc basis if needed.
- Communicate audit findings, recommendations, and status of action items to executive management and the Audit Committee.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, and governance processes.
- Identify areas of improvement and provide recommendations to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of internal controls, overall operational efficiency and compliance.
- Lead, train and develop a high-performing global internal audit team, including building of bench strength and succession planning.
- Monitor the implementation of audit recommendations and follow up on corrective actions.
- Conduct investigations and reviews as directed by the Audit Committee
- Stay up-to-date on industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and emerging risks.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to the internal audit team.
- Collaborate with other departments across the organization to ensure a comprehensive understanding of business processes and risks.
Qualifications
• Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in internal audit, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of internal control frameworks, risk management, and governance principles.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience reporting to Audit Committees and Board of Directors.
• Ability to work effectively with executive management and across all levels of the organization.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• Proficiency in audit software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Education
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.

Pay Range: $144,000 - $195,000 + Equity & Bonus
The salary range for this position is determined by considering a variety of factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and the location of the position.
