Estimating Manager

Job Description

Stepan is hiring an Estimating Manager to join our Global Engineering team in Northbrook, Illinois to lead our Estimating function. He or she will be responsible for the following:
Responsibilities
• Lead the estimating function and team as part of the Global Engineering team
• Prepare Conceptual and Detail Estimates including scope validation to support the Front End Loading (FEL) stages thru Detail Design for Stepan Projects 
• Define and improve the Stepan Estimating Standards and Procedures.
• Develop Stepan’s Global Estimating Database by collecting and conditioning historical cost data
• Develop the Basis of Estimate (BOE) documentation for each estimate providing pricing Methodology, assumptions and clarifications.
• Provide training to Project Managers, Project Engineers, Process Engineers and Junior Estimators in proper estimating methodology in compliance with Stepan’s estimating standards and procedures.
• Analyze drawings, sketches, and scope of work documentation to compile a complete and accurate cost estimate.
• Responsible for validation of contractor estimates during FEL3 to insure scope and accuracy and provide feedback to Stepan Company Senior Management.
• Conduct reviews with project team and Senior Management to ensure accuracy and completeness of the cost estimate.
• Ensure all estimates (internal and external) are completed per Stepan Company’s Estimating Standards and Procedures.
• Act as a resource for Project Management by developing cost studies, estimates, and change order analysis to support projects during the FEL process.
• Identify known unforeseen elements that would affect cost and apply cost allowances to cover these risks.
• Apply contingency to estimates in compliance with Stepan Estimating Standards and accepted industry norms.
• Correctly apply escalation to predict future labor and material cost impacts.
• Conduct Estimate Kickoff Meetings with the project team at each project stage gate.
• Maintain and improve the Stepan Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

Qualifications

• Minimum of 15 years of Estimating experience is required.
• Intermediate skills with commercial estimating software (e.g. Aspen Tech CCE and Cleopatra).
• Minimum of 3 years of managerial experience
• Experience in Chemical and related industries is required
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications is required
• Knowledge of conceptual estimating processes and methodology is required.
• Understanding of indirect costs and their application to the cost estimate is required.
• Strong working knowledge of MS Office with emphasis on Excel, Word, and Access
• Experienced with preparing and providing presentations to groups.
• Knowledge of budgeting, cost control, forecasting, planning and scheduling.
• Knowledge of cash flow, productivity analysis and change management.
• Experience using Front End Loading (FEL) and Gated Engineering Work Process.

Education

• BS in Engineering, Construction Management or Business.

Pay Range: $117,000 - $178,000

The salary range for this position is determined by considering a variety of factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and the location of the position.
