Job Description
Stepan is seeking a Senior Toxicologist to join our Global Regulatory team in Northbrook, IL. In this role, you will report to the Director, Global Regulatory & Product Safety. You will join a dynamic regulatory team responsible for managing regulatory and product safety matters related to Stepan’s portfolio of surfactants, polymers, and other specialty ingredients. The Senior Toxicologist will be responsible for leading all toxicology activities for Stepan’s new and existing product portfolio, management and mentorship of the toxicology team, and engagement in advocacy efforts to support company and industry efforts. The Senior Toxicologist will collaborate closely with the product registration team, research and development, and the commercial organization in support of commercial and innovation portfolio opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
Toxicology - Provide strategic toxicology support for the surfactant, polymer, and natural products businesses; key responsibilities include:
• Develop and manage implementation of toxicology strategies, including hazard and risk assessment and utilization of modeling tools, that enable Stepan to offer new products as well as globalize existing products consistent with business objectives and in compliance with global regulatory requirements.
• Negotiate and resolve toxicology study requirements requested by regulatory authorities with ability to effectively advocate for the company’s position.
• Serve as subject matter expert in toxicology including interpreting results of in vivo, in vitro, and other toxicity studies to assess the safety of company products and to meet regulatory requirements.
• Track emerging product safety concerns/issues and together with Regulatory leaders, communicate to stakeholders regarding product safety changes that could impact Stepan business interests. Communicate risk for Stepan from a human health and product safety perspective.
• Oversee identification, selection and management of contract laboratories and external consultants engaged to do toxicological studies or risk assessments on behalf of Stepan business. Monitor, manage, and review toxicology and corresponding studies conducted by vendors.
• Assign GHS hazard classifications to Stepan products for utilization by the hazard communication team in their development of safety data sheets and labels.
• Manage TSCA 8(e) program and submit necessary reporting to authorities.
Toxicology Team Management - Manage Toxicology Team (currently 1 direct report) including projects, databases, tools, work processes and infrastructure. Key responsibilities include:
• Delegate work appropriately and direct, train and develop all direct reports.
• Conduct annual performance management and development processes.
• Develop a global process for toxicology and hazard/risk assessment along with standard operating procedures for documenting strategy and rationale, supporting data, negotiations, and final outcome.
• Oversee regional and global product safety inquiries, strategy setting, assessment, testing and evaluation.
Advocacy - Engagement in trade association and industry task force advocacy efforts to support company and industry efforts; key responsibilities include:
• Actively participate in and promote Stepan’s interests within industry consortia and advocacy groups (i.e., ACC, ACI, HCPA, and PCPC) and Regulatory agencies.
Qualifications
• Must have 5 - 10 years of experience in product safety / toxicology with a chemical company.
• Must have experience in chemical industry; experience in surfactant industry is beneficial.
• Ability to interact effectively with business leaders, government agencies and trade associations.
• Knowledge of US EPA Sustainable Futures modeling tools beneficial but not required.
• Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills
• Experience managing a team of direct reports.
• Strong competency in project management, negotiation, and communication.
• Strong business acumen, problem solving and decision making skills and ability to manage through systems.
Education
• Bachelors of Science or PhD in Toxicology or other biological science. Master's preferred.
Pay Range: $101,000 - $135,000
The salary range for this position is determined by considering a variety of factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and the location of the position.
