Job Description
Stepan is seeking an Analytical Manager to join our R&D team at our Global Technology Center in Northfield, IL. In this role, you will report to the R&D Manager for the Analytical department. The position will primarily require managing a group of analytical chemists and the planning of projects using advanced analytical techniques including but not limited to NMR, GC and MS.
Key Responsibilities:
• Plan and execute advanced analytical in support of various assigned projects. Demonstrated understanding and ability to utilize combinations of analytical techniques, such as MS, GC, HPLC, FT-IR and NMR.
• Demonstrated abilities to manage multiple complex projects and independently develop the strategy for the overall project load. Has complete responsibility for managing overall project workload; design, schedule, direct and execute complex projects, either personally or with other work group members.
• Plays leadership role in achieving WG goals and objectives. Plays mentor role in department WG, providing technical advice and training to colleagues. Values people and their contributions.
• Build constructive relationships with other WGs and departments; relates well throughout the organization.
• Conceive of projects and ideas to contribute to the overall growth and profit of Stepan. Effectively sells the ideas/projects to gain support/approval.
• Develop strategy and execution plan from problem statement through final resolution (if possible).
• Document and communicate technical work and findings via verbal updates and an organized, up-to-date laboratory notebook, record time allocation per policy, produce well written project reports; for both personal work and through direct reports.
Qualifications
• Advanced understanding of analytical techniques, such as MS, GC, HPLC, FT-IR and NMR.
• Experience with data and error analysis, stochiometric and formulation calculations, and instrument/method validation.
• Experience working with vendors. Negotiating instrument purchases, service contracts, and services. Develop and manage project expense spend and capital budgets.
• Demonstrated ability to perform self-directed projects and communicate results in a clear, concise and timely manner using communications tools appropriate for the target audience.
• Outstanding leadership, team building skills, develops and trains direct reports as applicable.
• Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills are a must.
Education
- Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or closely related field, Masters or Ph.D. preferred but not required.
