Project Engineering Summer Intern

Job Description

Stepan is a manufacturer of Surfactants and Polyester Polyols serving the global market.  Stepan’s chemical processes and operations involve Hazardous Chemicals and industrial chemical processes that are subject to industry Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.


We have an opportunity for summer internship for students in current pursuit of a BS in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.  Stepan is offering an internship based at our newest manufacturing plant in Pasadena, TX in support of site capital project execution.

 

Summer Interns will be mentored by a senior team member and work on one or more active projects and assist in continuous improvement of the Global Project Delivery System - Stepan's capital project management system.

 

Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Performing a supporting role as project engineer on capital project teams, working under direction from a senior engineer.
  • Supporting project engineering functions on key capital projects. This includes
    • Generating Scopes of Work for Engineering Services and Construction Trades
    • Reviewing technical submittals from both internal and 3rd party sources including:
      • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
      • Equipment Arrangement and Piping Diagrams
      • Equipment Drawings and Vendor Submittals
      • Electrical Power Design Drawings
      • Process Instrumentation Design Drawings and Specs
      • Structural Drawings (Concrete Foundation and Structural Steel)
    • Generating project schedules and cost estimates.
    • Monitoring and controlling project scope, schedules, budgets, and risks.
  • Learning the construction process.  Completing field visits to understand design-for-constructability considerations and planning for construction safety.
  • Actively participating and contributing in safety programs to continually improve the safety culture of the Company.
  • Identifying problems and communicate them to supervisor.
  • Helping solve problems and make projects successful.

Qualifications

• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to organize, prioritize, and work both independently and within a team environment
• Ability to work well with others at all organizational levels
• Six Sigma knowledge
• Strong teamwork and communication skills
• Broad technical knowledge in general Engineering principles

Education

• A High School Diploma
• A rising Senior currently enrolled at an accredited university, majoring in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering
